i know i'm missing alot (and the order is random). Prince came on around 9:15 and played 'til i think almost 11:30? he started with Musicology and Let's Go Crazy and the rest i don't recall the order but i'll not some songs i remember. last time i saw Morris (the only time) was in NYC at a small club and i was so close i could count Morris' freckles! honestly i could have reached out just a bit and touched the guys feet! we were so high that i was almost queasy when we first got up there! lol yep the heights thing LOLĪnd they didn't turn on the big screen until Prince came on so i could not see Morris very well. we were like 4th row from the bottom of the highest section. they were way the hell up there! i still can't believe how high. and yes we had to take an elevator to get to our seats. the guy who rode us up in the elevator told us "do you know who's opening?" to which i replied "no, who?" and he said "Morris Day!". anyway, i haven't been to see him in concert since i think 1997 when i saw him twice, my first show at the Roxy in Boston (which was incredible!) and the second time not too much later at the Fleet Center in Boston (i was so far he was a teeny ant).Īnyway, Mike surprised me with tickets to the Staples Center concert in LA tonight, and i wanted to share what i remember but i've still followed his releases and i still have a few buds who keep me up to date on the gigs and press. then i moved across country and had other stuff going on and just didn't have/find the time for. No doubt the aftershows contain better material than this choice.I used to be a and ppml "regular" (hi Ben! hi Val!) but when he started with the Jehovah's witness crap i lost some interest. like he couldn't decide to rap or sing and does whatever regardless of what is happening around him musically. And I totally agree that Musiq part is so out of place. It's the sort of stuff you'd expect of an aftershow and the type of jamming that often doesn't have a place on the main show. Still I would rather hear a sincere opinion even if it contrasts with mine and I don't doubt your feelings here. I feel the band sounds feels organic and fresh on this track and I like Prince's guitar on the medley so don't see it as bad as you think it is. Also I could think of at least half a dozen performances worse than this. While his performance is not perfect I could not see it as souless at all. E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator There is absolutely no soul in his singing and virtually no music, either.Ī shame because it unbalances an otherwise fun and funky aftershow jam. because you sure won't get that from listening to him sing. Interesting that he has to tell you how soulful he is and how musical he is in his NAME. The WORST single performance on any Prince record, ever. He's filled with cliches in all his performance tics and really sounds like an amateur with an over-inflated opinion of themselves more than anything else.
#Prince one nite alone the aftershow zip how to#
He has no understanding of teh meaning or internal logic of either song, just batting out words in the weirdest arhythmic way, and seems to have little to no understanding of even how to breathe correctly as a singer. He is painfully off-key for starters, and maybe you could say he just couldn't hear himself on stage that night - it's possible - but apart from that, he makes all the WORST choices in his performance. His performance is excruciating on the medley of Just Friends and If You Want Me To Stay. Like, HOW was he allowed to even take the mic, let alone appear on the final record? I've never heard of him outside of this album, and based on what's here, I'm going to keep it that way. Listening again I am floored, really stunned about just how AWFUL Musiq Soulchild is on this! I always liked this album overall, it has a fun, laid-back feel to it. Was listening yesterday, and it sounds great, thankfully.
